Flowers as an important element in special contexts or dates have been used since prehistory. Its use to decorate places or honor the deceased has been a constant since prehistoric times, as has been demonstrated in tombs from the Neanderthal period, in which the fossil remains were covered with flower pollen, apparently for ritual use.[citation required]

In Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire, flowers were used to decorate events and wakes. In the Middle Ages, the custom was continued and, from the 17th century, in Western Europe, ladies were in charge of decorating their residences with flowers that they got in their garden or by acquiring them from professional growers who sold them, Holland being one of the first countries that specialized in exotic species.

The professionalization of these establishments is recent and the emergence of the florist as we know it dates back to the 19th century, coinciding with the urbanization process of developed societies. Until that time, there were street vendors who provided flowers or made ad hoc bouquets on specific dates and, in rural areas, funeral homes prepared flower crowns for the deceased.

In recent years, the trend has been to integrate all flower sales services into a multipurpose business that, on occasion, also handles cultivation. The flower workshops combine the cultivation of our own species and marketing.
